Bachmann could possibly be Swiss in origin, but I would guess that it is German mainly because that whole region speaks German (including parts of Italy and France). My family came directly from Germany, but Germany once covered a large portion of Europe, so the name is in various countries. By the by, Bach means brook or little stream, and Mann, of course, means man, so John Bachmann was probably "John, the man who lives by the brook"
