The name Cabeza de Vaca comes from a battle in 1212. An Iberian King, Sancho, was going to battle the Moors. He didn't know his way through a certain mountain range until he came across a cow herder. The cow herder put a cow skull on the path that led the King to the battle. After the battle was won, the King came back and dubbed this man "Cabeza de Vaca", or "head of a cow." It's thought that the name "Baca" comes from this person.
