Vicki,

So far, it seems there were 3 Baber families in Rutherford, NC in the late 1790's and on. John Baber, my line, has no James. John Baber, relationship unknown, has no James. The name James carries down from the James and Mildred Arthur family only. Many from the Rutherford line moved on to SC, AL, & GA.

Lenore Babers O'Donnell had the NC and SC areas researched in the early 1950's. The results of this research are posted on Joe Baber's site under Lenore's Letters. Check them out there may be a clue. I have not had the time to try and match up all the information to the proper person.

Unfortunately, this family did not have much imagination for names and we have too many John's, James's, etc..

It seems most of these folks were tobacco planters and after 3 or 4 years, the land would become depleted and they would move on. Thus, the scattering of the family.
