Just came across your message. I've just started doing some research on my ancestry, so I have some info that may be of use to you.
My Great-Grandfather was James Edward Babb. His Father was James Babb, who married Susan Mead on 8/25/1825. I assume he was the author of your letters.
James Edward Babb was apparently adopted by one Benjamin Coe at about the age of 7. He eventually assumed the Coe name (all of which I have just recently became aware - after tracing my apparent "Coe family links back to England :( ).
So, I am one of those family descendents.
