Azzara/Azzaro ??

Hi folks:
I'm a 'seasoned' genealogist but have just started a line for my new son-in-law. The information he gave me starts with a Joseph AZZARO b. in Italy in 1895, married to a Mary GENNARO who was b. in 1896. I did some searches for the AZZARO name but got no where. When I looked on GenForum I noticed there wasn't even a forum for that surname. Could it be that the surname is really AZZARA?
Could you knowledgable AZZARA folks help me out and let me know if there is ever a variation in the spelling or a different surname entirely? Where do the surnames originate geographically?
Many thanks,

Mary
