I am descended from the Azbel family
of Jews who lived in the Russian Ukraine, as
discussed in the above page. Both "Azbel"
and "Asbill" have roots in a name that is best transliterated from the Hebrew as "Ashbel". (Hebrew has only one /a/ sound,
which rhymes with the first vowel in "Roger.")
