Try the Globe-Miami Herald or the Gila or Graham County Historical Societies, the prison in Florence might even have info as to the charges he was convicted of.
Growing up 30 mi from Globe I do remember hearing of the incident in AZ history, they were pretty common place, judges in mining areas were supposedly bought off all the time. Which made them obvious targets.
