Hi Deb (and anyone else who might be interested)!
I was born and raised in Ajo, and will be happy to help anyone as best I can with questions about Ajo. All my immediate family is still in Ajo.
Ajo is located in Pima County in southern AZ about 110mi. south of Phoenix and 120mi. east of Tucson. The "mines" you refer to would be the Phelps Dodge Copper mine which was an open pit mining operation. The mine has been shut down for some time now (since the mid 1980's), but the pit itself and some of the buildings still stand. In fact, Ajo was a "company" town. (Complete with the "Company Store"!)
Ajo is a very small town and everyone that doesn't know one another definately knows of each other. The name POWERS didn't ring a bell at first, but for some reason the more I think of it the more familiar it sounds. (For some reason the name John Powers comes to mind...) I will ask and see if there are any POWERS still living in the area.
Another note that struck me interesting: My Williams/Welch lines moved to Ajo in 1926 (the same year your ancestor passed away) from Louisiana.
Feel free to e-mail me with any other questions. Please do e-mail as I don't always get back to this board.
