My husbands Grandfather was also a sheriff in the Cochise County, AZ area in the 1905-1940 times. I do not have closer dates. I do have some pictures of a man with guns that looks like he is sheriff. He is wearing a side arm holding a rifle. Behide him is a packard or dodge license plate number 12704. No names or dates on any pictures. guessing the car at late 20's early 30's. Could this be your J.E. Hood. Do you have any records or information that mentions "Two-gun" Sheriff Dan. Daniel Thompson - arrived from England in 1904. Also worked in the CooperQueen mine. Later he owned the motor court in Lowell area.
