Checked the 1840 list of Mine Owners in Yorkshire. No Ayre listed as an owner but that does not mean he was not a partner or shareholder in a mine. The mine could also not have been in Yorkshire in which case he would not show up.
What threw me on your original letter was that you are a generation behind me. Instead of allowing the gap at my end of the branch, I wrongly allowed for it at the other end. The dates as you said would suggest that your Charles and my Miss Ayre are contemporary.
I would be interested to know if your branch had heard of the scandal over my Miss Ayre. Your Charles would still have been in the UK
when Miss Ayre eloped. You now have the details of the Miss Ayre and Frederick Wilson scandal. Hope it is some use.
