There is a reference book which collects from public records people with the last name Aynes. In 1996 it suggested that the people bearing that last name numbered: France 78 The root word "Ayne", in old English, refers to "first" -- possibly first-born. In old English a lot of words we now spell with an "i" were spelled with "y." For example: tyme (time) and Kyng (king). So it is possible that at some point some people named Ayne or Aynes changed the spelling of their names to Aine or Aines. Though I think there are earlier records, I know that in 1637 there is an English record showing a marriage between Margaret Aynes of St. Giles and Menihard Vonham at Cripplegate Church in England. There is a coat of arms for a Fench family of Aynes associated with the province (?) of Beaujolais. The Aynes family in the United States begins to show up on records around 1790. Jane Aynes married Martin Harden in 1792 in Culpepper Virginia. The Census for 1800 shows a Moses Aynes in Pennsylvania. Each census after that show Aynes families in an increasing number of states. The largest concentration today is in the state of Indiana. I would be curious to know if anyone has discovered any Aynes family in the U.S. prior to this l792 reference? Also, does anyone know whether the U.S. Aynes families came from England, France, Spain, or somewhere else?
