From "Pioneer Families of Northwest New Jersey": The John Ayres of Baskingridge and later of Hackettstown, NJ. was born in 1663. He is generally referred to as John Ayres the second; he was not the immigrant; he was the son of Obadiah and the grandson of John the immigrant. In this case John the second does not mean Junior; it means grandson. In this lineage the generations run thus: (A) John Ayres the first (the immigrant) (B) Obadiah Ayres the first (C) John Ayres the second (D) Obadiah Ayres the second. John Ayres the second was the first to come to northwestern New Jersey. New Jersey families chose either Ayres or Ayers for spelling. John Ayres the second, son of Obadiah the first, located at Baskingridge, Somerset County, NJ., where and his son, Obadiah the second, became the founders of the First Presbyterian church of Baskingridge, noted for its great oak under which men gathered for the War of the Revolution, and for its school of evangelists who had great influence in stemming the tide of ungodliness which then prevailed. Obadiah the second, born at Woodbridge January, 1695, married (1) on February, 1717, Elizabeth Compton and (2) Deborah ?
