John Moore was a younger son to Sir Francis Moore,of Fawley, Buckinghamshire, knighted by Charles I of England in 1627. He may have inherited the title, as the date of his eldest son's death is unknown. Certainly some references to him in England say he became Sir John Moore. He went to America in 1680, and married Rebecca Axtell in 1685. However, before leaving England, he had a daughter, Elizabeth, born circa 1679. She died in Jamaica on 13th January, 1735, aged 56, (See Philip Wright Monumental Inscriptions of Jamaica, page 154), and circumstantial evidence is very strong that she accompanied John on his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. When John's first wife died (name etc. unknown), Elizabeth therefore must have been raised by Rebecca to womanhood, as well as raising her own large family. In about 1695, Elizabeth married Edward Pennant, Senior (1672-16th June 1736), a senior Member of the Jamaican Council, and from 1707 Chief Justice of Jamaica. He declined the Governorship of the Island in 1735, on account of his poor health. They had 5 sons and 5 daughters, including Smart, who married twice before being killed by a falling house in a 14 hour long hurricane on 28th August 1722, when she was only 23 years old. The children's marriages linked most of the major families within the Island. Notify Administrator about this message?
