Aaron Axtell was born September 18, 1791 in Friendship, Allegany Co., New York, son of Aaron Axtell and Sarah Crabtree and served in Kennedy's Company, New York Militia in the War of 1812. He came to Illinois with his wife, Hannah Steenrod and their 12 children in 1839. He and the boys came by ox-drawn covered wagon while Hannah and the girls and a younger son came by boat. They met in Chicago and shortly moved to Walnut. He died in Walnut on December 7, 1872. Descendants of Aaron and Hannah still living in Walnut are the Hardersen, Foss and Yonk families.
