Axtell Family Genealogy Corrections

NANCY JANE AXTELL, daughter of Daniel Thomas Axtell and Jane Wellman was born in Peru, MA on May 10, 1813. You will find her name misspelled “Nauncy” in the vital records in Peru. She was married on November 12, 1833 (not 1837) in Russia Township (now Oberlin), Lorain County, OH to GEORGE WILLIAM LOGHRY (not Lothrie); she had 5 children (not 2); died in Indiana (not Illinois), and after 1847, but BEFORE March of 1850 (not IN March of 1850). Her exact date of death is unknown at this time, and given Indiana’s records from that time, her date of death will likely never be known.

George and Nancy (Axtell) Loghry were living in that part of Shawnee Township that would become Rob Roy, in Fountain County, IN. Shawnee Township has the Wabash River as its northwestern boundary, and the Big Shawnee Creek runs through the township. Communities include Aylesworth, Fountain and Rob Roy.

With this many errors for one individual, I hope none of my Axtell cousins are accepting the 1945 Axtell Genealogy as being 100% accurate! We have advantages available to us that Carson did not have at the time he took on the job of compiling his work, so it’s up to all of us to use those advantages to correct any errors! Keep in mind, there is a town of MARLBORO and a town of MARLBOROUGH—both in Massachusetts!

For those interested, Nancy’s grandmother, [Rebecca (French) Axtell] died in Peru, MA on July 26, 1813. You will also find her name misspelled in the vital records. And, Nancy’s mother, Jane Wellman, was the daughter of Abraham Wellman and Rebecca Pearson.

Further up the line, are Daniel Axtell and Thankful Pratt, daughter of Elder William Pratt and Elizabeth Baker. If interested in information for Thankful (Pratt) Axtell’s parents, You will find Chapter 4 of “History of the Town of Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts” by William L. Chaffin; published by John Wilson and Son, University Press, 1886, is all about William Pratt! (I also have the Pratt lineage!)

His stone reads: “Here lise the body of Elder William Pratt, aged 54, died in the year 1713, January the 13.”

Elizabeth’s stone reads: “Here lyes y body of M Elizabeth Pratt, wife to Elder William Pratt, died August y 20th 1728, in 73 year of her age.”

Hope these few little tidbits help and inform those who are interested!
