I don't know who or what is correct, I think I'll just throw my tinder on the fire and see how brightly we can burn it!
The following is what I have been able to come up with so far starting from Henrie Emberie...
ID: I12751 Name: Henrie Embrie Sex: M Birth: 1615 in England 1 Note: [17284.ftw]
References Hotten, John Camden. "The Original Lists of persons of Quality: Emmigrants: Religious Exiles: Political Rebels..." Genealogical Publishing Co, 1974, p. 96 and Tepper, Michael. :Passengers to America: A consolidation of Ship Passenger List from New England Historical and Genealogical Register" Genealogical Publishing Co. p89 list Henrie's age as 20 years when arriving to Virginia in 1635. He was reported as coming from Gravesend, England (this may have been the point of departure).
The name has many spellings, including D'Embry, Emberie, Embree, D'Amery, Ambrey, Hembree....and others.
Some records on various sites indicate that Henrie's father was a JOHN EMBRY born somewhere in France. His birth date is given as both 1555 and 1595, and that’s a pretty big gap. Maybe a father and son with the same name?
Probably a French Huguenot as the American Southern Quaker Embrees and the Canadian Embrees.
John’s father is listed as WYLLM EMBRY and the birthplace is listed as Wales/France. I have not been able to confirm these listings and haven't a clue what the combination of "Wales/France" is supposed to mean, unless he was born in Wales and moved to France?
It is quite certain in my mind that Embrys have some basis in France. There are towns named Embreville and Embry in the Pas de Calais area, Cambrai (Cambrai is also in Northern France, and according to some is where the name Embry comes from) and Embres-et-Castelmaure in the south of France. There are many Embrys now living in the Languedoc and Carcassonne areas of (southern) France.
The Dictionary of English and Welsh surnames- by Burdsley assumes that "The Family of D'Amery came to England with the conqueror from Tours"
I have also been able to confirm that the names EMBRY, EMRY, EMBREY and AMBREY are existent in Wales, most of them currently living in the Monmouth area. There's a Croft Ambrey-Bredon hill style found in eastern Wales, and there's an Emry's Castle in Wales.
Dinas Emrys means "Fort of Ambrosius."(an interesting tale attached to this on the internet)*.
Dinas Emrys means "Fort of Ambrosius." Geoffrey of Monmouth
Emry in Welsh means “child of light”.
NOW HERE'S THE REAL INTERESTING PART WHERE YOUR HENRY AWBREY SHOWS UP AS AN EMBRY!
Descendants of Henry Emberie
Generation No. 1
1.HENRY1 EMBERIE was born 1615 in England, and died Bef. 1671.He married JOAN JOBE 1635 in York County Virginia. She was born 1617.
Notes for HENRY EMBERIE:
Henry came to Virginia from Gravesend, Kentshire England on the boat "America" in 1635.The passenger list shows that he was 20 years old at that time.
He lived in York County Virginia.Records that have been pieced together from various sources show that he married Joan Jobe who also came over on the ship "America" with Henry. They appear to have come over as indentured servants.
They would have married 1635 in York County Virginia. It is known that Joan had close ties to the Peter Starkey family and that her probable son, Isaac had his last apprecticeship with the Giles Travenor family. Both the Starkey and Travenor families lived in York County Virginia.A Joan Embury lived in York County in 1671 on land belonging to Peter Starkey.Henry must have died berore 1671 since Joan is the only one mentioned as living on Starkey land at that time.
Most people traveling from London by boat departed through Gravesend. It is unknown if Henry Emberie was a French Hugeuenot that escaped to England before coming to America. The Quaker Embrees of the Southern States as well as Canadian Embrees were originally French Huguenots, moved from the North of France to England in the early 17th Century.

In 1653 he was transported to Warrick Coounty, Virginia and worked as a servant to Gyles Travernor. He was given a cow by Glyes in his will.He was a close friend of the Travenor family. He disappeared from the Virginia records for a 40 year period. He apeared in the York Couonty records in 1659 when he returned cattle of the orphans of Roger Lewis. The next record for him is that of his death in 1699 in York County.

2.HENRY2 AMBRY (HENRY1 EMBERIE) was born 1636 in York County, VA, and died 1694 in Essex County, VA.He married MARY.
Notes for HENRY AMBRY:
Henry was also known as:Emery, Ambrey and Amberry.
He was a Burgess (a representative in the colonial legislature of Virginia) from Rappahannock County, Virginia in 1664.He was a Justice of the Court and High Sheriff of Rappahannock County. He was the first Burgess of Essex County after it was formed from Rappahannock County.
Henry Amberry (spelled Awberry in typewritten copies of county records) acted as interpreter for the Rappahannock Indians after the masscre of 1675.These Indians deserted their lands due to hostilities of the local white community.Henry had lived in peace with the closeby Mattapony Indians and the Rappahannock Indians are believed to have sought Henry's help in 1676 to relocate. They resettled on part of the vast acreage he owned.Eight years after, in 1684, these Indians were persecuted by the Susquehanna Indians.Henry acted as interpreter for them and was a mediator between them and the county court.Henry persuaded the Rappahannock Indians to move up river and unite forces with friends and related Indians who lived on Part Tobacco Bay.
Henry was a landowner. He acquired the following land in Rappahannock County:
1050 acres 9 Apr on Hoskins Creek
480 acres 3 Sep 1699 on Puscatecon Creek. This is also dated 23 Mar 1671/1672.This land was adjacent to Henry's other land. This land was deserted (not settled)by Henry and reissued to James Taylor, 21 Oct 1687.
1530 acres 23 Mar 1671/72 on the south side of the Rappahannock River.
5700 acres 19 Mr 1677/1678.This is also dated 4 Oct 1675.It was located on the branches of the Piscataway Creek and Hoskins Creek of Mattopony River.
6630 acres, 10 July 1680
189 acres 20 Apr 1685 mouth of Occupation Creek
1200 acres 30 May 1688 Hoskins Creek.
(16679 acres total listed here)
When Henry died he gave his wife, Mary, the plantation and negroes. His son, Richard, received 700 acres on land on Hoskins Creek. He also gave 200 acres to his nephew, Francis Ambrey. It appears that his grandson, Henry Ambry, loved on the land in the 1714-1750 time frame.
Children of HENRY AMBRY and MARY are:
i. SUSANNA3 AMBRY, b. 1650; d. Unknown; m. PHILLIP MAGUIRE.
4. ii. RICHARD AMBRY, b. 1653; d. 1697, Essex County, VA.
3.WILLIAM2 EMBREE (HENRY1 EMBERIE) was born 1643 in York County Virginia, and died Abt. 1685 in Lancaster County, VA.He married SARA.
Children of WILLIAM EMBREE and SARA are:
i. WILLIAM3 EMBRY, b. 1665.
