My maternal grandmother's name was Basia Avrutis. She was born in 1898, in Pereyaslav-Khmelnitski, not far from Kiev.
Her father was Moisey (Moishe) Avrutis, and her mother was Gitlia Benditski. She had two brothers and one sister, and plenty of cousins with the same last name "Avrutis". I am almost sure that Newton Avrutis was somehow related to her. It is very likely that the "original" Avrutis was brought to Ukraine from Lithuania by a matchmaker - there was a custom of bringing brooms from far away, so to avoid intermarriages in Jewish families.
There still are some Avrutis families left in FSU. For example, my uncle, Michael Avrutis, lives in Kiev. My family immigrated to the USA in 1994. I live in Phoenix, Arizona.
