My paternal ggg grandfather is John Avery of Groton born in 1798 who married Sarah Cooper Avery. He was a respected pioneer of Bingham Township/St.Johns/Rochester Colony in Clinton County, Michigan. At the age of 13 he fought in the war of 1812 in the 23 Regiment. He was taken prisoner by the Indians at the battle of Fort Erie who took him into the wilderness of Canada for a year in the charge of Jack Brandt when his freedom was purchased by Twelve Mile Creek merchants Adams & Ball. He then returned to Jefferson County.,N.Y where he married Sarah Arnold Cooper in August of 1821. From there they went to Chautauqua County and made threir journey to Michigan in 1836. They stopped in Oakland County for 2 years before arriving in Clinton County in the autumn of 1838 with $50. He purchased 40 acres of land in Greenbush where they remained for five years. He then purchased 80 acres of land in Bingham where he resided the rest of his life. My brother has built a home on the former Avery land where the barns once stood and is straight across the road from the historic Avery home. John cut out the original road for two miles and put in the first log bridges. The road had been named after him and is to this day. With great perseverance he cleared the heavily timbered land and went on to purchase over 400 acres. Their had seven children, as follows.,John born 1824 who married Jane Hoyt Ewell., Horace who died in childhood (?)., Sarah Ann who married Wm. Chapman., James Merrit who married Sarah Campbell., Tyler Caldwell who married Hannah Marie Rowell.,Marvin Emory who was a casuality of the Civil War., Sanford Cooper who is my gg grandfather born in 1843 who married Marinda Rolfe (legend has it she was related to Thomas Rolfe son of John Rolfe and Pochahantas) and Laura who married Leonard Clark. In addition, Sarah and John had adopted three other children whose identities are unknown at this time. Three of their children served in the Civil War,John,Jr., a physician was a surgeon of the 22nd Infantry and with Sherman on his march to the sea. He eventually went on to practice medicine in Greensville, Mi. Son, Marvin was a sergeant with the 6th Cavalry perished at Trevillian Station, VA on June 12, 1864 and Merrit who served with a regiment from Minnesota where he had resided. John was said to have been a great supporter of the union cause and in 1863 at the age of 65 he called upon Presiden Lincoln and was furnished a pass to the front; went to the Fairfax Court House, where his son was stationed. Upon his arrival there he was furnished a horse and rations, and rode with the regiment for four weeks, during which time he witnessed the battle of Gettysburg. An admirable achievement for a man of his age, he surely must have been a man of great honor and conviction who had deep love for his family and country. Sarah Cooper Avery died at the age of 77 in December of 1877. John went on to manage the farm with the same pioneer spirit and energy until his death on Sept. 15, 1883 in St. Johns, Michigan. I hope this information may help others in their quest and I myself am in need of further information from this point on Sanford Cooper Avery who married Marinda Rolfe residing in Mich. all of their lives. Their daughter Nona Marinda married Joseph Matthias Cramer(son of Peter Cramer and Elizabeth Lotz.) Nona Avery Cramer and Joseph Matthias are my great grandparents. As a child I was shown pictures of Joseph in uniform who was a U.S. Marshall and Sheriff of either Gratiot or Clinton County in Mid-Michigan. Their son Cecil Everett Cramer married Iva Wagner. They are my paternal grandparents. Iva's mother was Edith and they lived in the Bannister/Eureka/Elsie/Rochester Colony area of Gratiot and Clinton Counties. Any information on this line would be ever so appreciated. Many thanks.
