I am looking for information on the Averitt Family around Cedar Creek, Cumberland County, and White Oak/Jerome, Bladen County, NC (they are very close together). I have a family tree that goes back to the 1500's --it was done in the 1930's I think. My grandmother's maiden name was Sarah Elizabeth Averitt and she was born around 1903 in White Oak, Bladen County. Her father's name was Zachary Taylor Averitt and my great-grandmother Bertha Frances Ezzell (called Burtee) was his third and final wife. Most of his children from his first two marriages moved to Alabama. My grandmother's father and one of his sisters, Rebekka, married Ezzell siblings. So, my grandmother had some double first cousins. My grandmother knew some other Averitts around Cedar Creek and Fayetteville; she referred to one as Surveyor Averitt and Doctor Averitt. I also have original deeds and records of the Averitt family that my grandmother passed down to me. Someone in my family has the old Averitt bible -- it is in a language other than English. My grandmother's family has been in this country since the 1600's and in the Bladen County area since the 1700's. If anyone would like a copy of the family tree (which traces the Averitts -- from Normandy -- they came over with William the Conqueror -- and were weavers in England -- to Virginia -- then to Bladen/Cumberland counties in North Carolina -- let me know. I would also like to talk to other Averitts from Bladen/Cumberland County.
