The father of Sarah Averette, the wife of Thomas Averette of 1750s Lunenburg County, Virginia was, according to family genealogists, JOSEPH MASSIE (or Massey) of Brunswick County, Virginia. His wife, and the mother of Sarah Massie Averette, was ELIZABETH (???) MASSIE.Joseph Massie's will is given in "Brunswick County, Virginia Will Books, Vol. 1, (Will Books 2 and 3, 1739 - 1769; 1783 - 1785), Abstracted by Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr.", Will Book 3, Page 119. The will is dated 19 August 1760 and was probated in Brunswick County Court, 26 May, 1761. Joseph and Elizabeth Massie's children were: John, Sarah Averette, Amey Avent, Rebecca Wise, Agnes Richardson, Mary Wise, Joseph, Jr., William, Thomas, James, Winfrit, Lucy, Betty, and Frances. We believe that Thomas Averette's (of Lunenburg County, Va.) parents were RICHARD AVERETTE and JANE PERRY of Surry County, Va. (ref. "Surry County, Virginia Court Records (Order Book 1671 -1691) 1682 - 1691, Book 4" by Weynette Parks Haun, Pages 88-89). Richard Averette was born in England, ca. 1640, and came to Isle of Wight County, Va. in 1665. Richard's father was RICHARD AVERETTE, born in Filongley, Warwickshire, England ca. 1589, and his grandparents were WILLIAM AVERETTE born in England, ca. 1525, and wife ELIZABETH HARBY. THOMAS AVERETTE of Lunenburg County, son of Richard and Jane Averette, was born ca. 1688 - 1690, probably in Isle of Wight County. His daughter ELIZABETH AVERETTE is my ancestor grandmother. She was born to Thomas and Sarah Averette in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia, on July 30, 1722. She was married to WILLIAM SMITH ca. 1745, and they had a son, JOHN BUCKNER SMITH, my great, great, great grandfather, who was married to MARGARET PAINE in Orange County, N. C. in 1787, probably his second wife. Buckner and Margaret's daughter SARAH SMITH (ca. 1795 - 1876) married DANIEL NETHERY (1789 - 1866) on February 14, 1816 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, near the County Seat of Boydton. They are my great, great grandparents.
