The following information was given to me by Elaine Smith about 15 yrs. ago; She is the granddaughter of Laura's brother Robert Roy. Laura's parents: Robert Alexander and Mary Elizabeth Barlow m. June 8, 1876 in Refugio, TX. He was born Jan 3/8 1843 in Blakely, Early Cty, GA and died 12 June 1895. They moved to Meridian TX in 1880. My information says that he was in Company A 51st. Regiment GA Volunteer Infantry, enlisting March 4 1862; he was captured and released at some point during the war. (I found this in the muster roll of the company.) He enlisted with his brother, Archibald and their cousins (my line.)
Robert's parents were Ephali and Lousia Smith. Ephali was born about 1810 likely in NC as his father appears in the Jones Cty. census for that year. Lousia Smith was b. c. 1820. Ephali died around 1854-1870; they had 10 children, likely all born in Blakely.
Ephali's father was Abner who died sometime between 1817 and 1821, leaving his 4 younger children under the guardianship of Green H. Chaires. Further than this, I have no direct information. The genealogy chart that Elaine Smith sent also includes a line she traced in NC to 1700 and which I have traced to the mid-1600's that includes the name Ephally, or Exhaley; this is James Battle Avirett's line. There are other names in common between these two lines, and I suspect that if Abner's parents were known, then the two lines would be connected.
Feel free to e-mail if you would like more information; I can mail the chart I have along with whatever else I have around if you would like.
