Averett Family Genealogy Forum

I have been researching my husband's family and they are descendants of Dempsey Averitt( 1748-1796)who came to North Carolina in the mid 18th Century. He and his family lived in the Cumberland County area of NC. Dempsey had nine children:(1)Henry Averitt 1772 -, (2)Zadoc Mills Averitt 1774 -, (3)Dempsey Averitt,II 1780 -,(4)Elijah Averitt 1782 -, (5)Honor Averitt 1784 -, (6)John Averitt 1786 -, (7)Daniel Averitt 1788 -, (8)Nancy Averitt 1792, and (9)Mary Averitt 1794 -. (My husband's line is from Henry, the oldest child). I have found a descendant of Dempsey II who may be the person you are looking for. Dempsey II was married first to Catherine Beard and then to Dorcas Reyburn. Dempsey II and Dorcas had three children, one of whom was Hiram R. Averitt who married (1)Julia Hilburn and (2) Elizabeth Ann Nunnery. Hiram had three children one of whom was William H.Averitt who married a Tabitha Caroline ____. The date I have on William is ca. 1819 and I think this family was also located in the eastern Cumberland County area of North Carolina. I have nothing on Tabitha, so I am no help there, but it seems interesting that this William's wife was Tabitha, and your dates are close to what I have found. This William had a brother named Dempsey Averitt, III, but I don't know more about him. He had a sister named Mary C. Averitt who married Stephen Williamson, and that is all I know about her. This information on the early Averitts came from research by Herschel Strange Averitt done in the mid 1930s. He was kin to the Averitts through two family lines and I think he learned about the family from visiting and gathering information from different family members. Often he would have first names or last names of spouses, as the family remembered them. Sometimes he would have information on place of migration if they had moved out of state. He did not have further information on William and Tabitha. I have found his research to be quite accurate, but at times there are family members who have been left out and the names were not listed in chronological order, but Herschel's work has proved to be very helpful in finding further information on the family.
