I'm skeptical about the Huguenot claim. I saw the posting here referencing the Wulfeck book so I stopped by the VA State Library 3/1/99. They had the book in stock, but its reference to the Avent/Gooch marriage only gave as its source another book, "Orange County, VA Families", by Brockman (vol 3). That book also states that the Avent/Gooch marriage took place, but gives no source - no will, deed, or anything else to back it up. An earlier posting also claims that Col. Thomas' bible is on file w/the Nat'l Huguenot Society. They've got a website, so I emailed them yesterday asking about it. The Exec Director of the NHS replied to me this morning, saying that they do not have his bible, and that the Avent name is not on any existing lists of Huguenot surnames that he's aware of. Until there's some backup for the claim that he married Margaret Gooch and that he was a Huguenot, we need to be careful.
