First, I had much rather exchange-e-mail than on GenForum, with the hocus pocus they pull- instead of giving you the message, you have to go on line etc... So no problem at all! Second, what I have is SHARED information- and in no way am I saying you are right and I am wrong. And on the name changes- Avent- is the most original, (USA) and in all the lines, you will find variations, according to possibly their spellings, court record spellings etc.etc.etc. All are OK and interchangeable. (You will trace any one line of Avent's and find three or more spellings) What I am saying here, is that Amos and his children, for two or three generations- chose to use Aven- which is not a common variation. (And makes his bunch easier to pick out!) On death certificates. They are only as accurate as the person who had the responsibility of filling them out after the death. In over 20 years, I have seen more than my share of erroneous ones. And all I am saying there, is don't put all your stuff in that one basket. It is like census records, where the woman USUALLY gets younger while the man gets older! (And it takes several comparisons to set an Approximate age. And PLEASE DO DOUBT ME, and anyone else who gives you anything, until you prove it yourself. All of it is just a jumping off spot. It does not hurt my feelings at all. I LOVE TO BE CORRECTED with proven information to replace what has been swapped around! (And I always write up the proof in my notes.) I think I told you my material came from an old Prodigy note- and the material shared with me by many, many people in over a 20 year period.....and it definitely could be wrong (I had the original in hand when I looked up this name-so wrongly given to me.) Aug.12 95-from John Terrell As to where she was born- a quick check of census records on Levi Smith will probably tell the tale there..where was he in the 1860 Census? Tax records? Land records? And if you find she is not his child, but Amey (And by the way, I don't list that child- and had no will, but there may be one...on Peter. I don 't show his death date, but born 1779. His son John born Clinton, Anderson, Tn. also shows married a Mary Elizabeth Sharp...dates, places, 8 children. Other children Andrew, Joseph and Twins Thomas Warren & Cary 1830 in Anderson Tn. Peter's line, by the way, as far as I know, has never been traced back to Thomas the Immigrant. Back to Levi---Dtr. of Mary Catherine "Molly" shown born 18 Jan 1862 Calhoun, died 5 Oct 1948 Calhoun, married 22 Jan 1880 Calhoun Co. Ms. All the children are shown born there---which again, may be the work of someone who did not check it out thoroughly. And we have lots of things that steer us wrong. I had a Bible- from My Grandfather's BROTHER- stating that his Great-Grandfather was William Avent. So I took him at his word..Surely he knew who his great-grandfather was---and chances William and his wife Hannah Goolsby back through her Pye's for a couple of years. Three notebooks full, or erroneous material..or at least it was NOT MY FAMILY. (His brother Benjamin, by the way is the pro generator of the other Avents in Ms.) We had a little thing in our genealogy society where we got a certificate for proving the generations. We did the first 3, and then the 8 "great's". When I got to that part, I had to do the census work I had NOT done on William, and lo and behold, he did not have my child in 1850...and John R. Aven DID!! (I have TWO Avant lines) And to date, many, many years later, I have not been able to trace John R. back any further. He was born NC and he too spelled it Aven, so I am suspecting that he will tie into my others, one day, in this same generation- Amos...but on proof yet. (Amos did have a John, shown married to someone else, and in Tn. but I do not find him either!) Levi was born in Henderson Tn...according to a desc. from Mary C. mentioned above. For sure his Father-Chesley W. was in Carroll Co. TN. 1850. (Pg. 38) This from notes on him: Bible in possession of William Chesley Aven. Anthony Aven aaven@lander.edu note posted on GenForum My notes on Levi's wife: Catherine Ann Diggs Her Application for his Civil War Pension states marriage date. Tombstone at Pine Ridge Cem Calhoun Co Ms used as proof. 1840 Census Henderson Co . Pg 347.
