Robert Hunter in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census Records
Entry for Robert Hunter in the 1840 Census of Choctaw County, MS:
Males: 2 less than 5; 1 five < ten; 1 twenty < thirty
Females: 1 less than 5; 1 twenty < thirty
1850 Census of Fayette County, AL, enumerated on the 8th of December 1850:
Robert Hunter 40, born in TN
Winned* 38, born in TN (*appears to be an abbreviation for Winnefred)
William 16, born in TN
Joseph 14, born in AL
Margret 11, born in MS
Robert 8, born in MS
George W. 6, born in AL
Isaac 5, born in AL
Mary 2, born in AL
Note that there were two sons less than five years old in the 1840 census, one of which cannot be found in the 1850 census.
Note that this family lived in MS at least between the years 1839 and 1842 (based on children's ages) which accounts for the entry for Robert Hunter in the 1840 Census of Choctaw County, MS.
1860 Census of Fayette County, AL, enumerated on the 15th of June 1860:
Robert Hunter 48, born in TN
Winny 47, born in TN (Ancestry interpreted the name as Henry)
William 25, born in TN
Margaret 20, born in AL (note that the 1850 census showed birthplace MS)
Robert 15, born in AL (note that the 1850 census showed birthplace MS)
George 14, born in AL
Isaac ?, born in AL
Mary 9, born in AL
Jackson 7, born in AL
Francis 6, born in AL (shown as female)
The ages for Robert, George, Isaac, and Mary in the 1860 census cannot be reconciled with the ages for these children in the 1850 census.
The assumption has been made that Robert must have died between 1860 and 1870, as his widow and last child was shown in the 1870 census of Choctaw County, MS, with son William:
1870 Census of Choctaw County, MS, enumerated on the 24th of October 1870:
William Hunter 38, born in TN
Sarah E. 30, born in MS
Lucinda J. 9, born in AL
Mary E. 7, born in AL
Winney M. 4, born in AL
Winney 60, born in TN
Francis 16, born in AL (shown as male and occupation of "works in farm" seems to confirm the designation; 1860 census shows Francis as female)
Winned, Winny, or Winney in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records with ages 38, 47, and 60, respectively, was the daughter of Peter Avants and Mary Elizabeth Sharp.
Would like to know when and where Robert and Winney married and any other information which would help to find Peter Avants in the 1830 census. For example, it would be helpful to determine Winney's date of birth or at least year of birth considering the disparity between 47 in 1860 and 60 in 1870. Assuming that Winney was living with her parents in 1830, this disparity becomes critical in finding Winney in the 1830 census because of the change in age bracket; it would be the difference between being counted in the "15<20" or "20<30" brackets. The age of 38 in 1850 compares favorably with 47 in 1860 considering the enumeration dates of the census in each case.
Also would like to find Robert Hunter in the 1830 census in order to check for Avants (Evans, Ivens, Avent, Avant, Avance) in the area.
Would appreciate any help. Jewel Gibson
