Damage/Pleasant Grove Cem., Elmore Co.AL
Dear Avant descendants:
As you know, some of our Avant ancestors are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Eclectic, Elmore County, Alabama (formerly Coosa County). Unfortunately, around August 1, 2001, excessive damage was done by teenage vandals. Apparently, it sounds as though almost every tombstone was hit. These tombstones are from the mid 1800s to today. Here is the newspaper article from the Montgomery (Al.) Advertiser.
"Complaints made in vandalism case
ECLECTIC — The Eclectic Police Department anticipates it will receive a total of 110 complaints in connection with more than $100,000 in damage caused by vandals at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Two local teen-agers are charged with vandalizing tombstones and monuments at the cemetery.
The vandalism, of which the department already has received about 20 complaints, occurred between 11 a.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday, said Mayor Thomas Coram.
Chief Investigator Tim Phillips with the Eclectic Police Department arrested two local teen-age boys on charges of vandalism about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 2, 2001."

This is really terrible. I just went out there in March, 2001, and took pictures. I live about 4 hours from Eclectic, Alabama. If anyone has any personal knowledge of the damage please post or e-mail me at [email protected].
Sincerely yours,
John Eric Burnum
