Hello Del,

My wife's great grandfather James C. Byers married Caroline Avans. James was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and is buried in Sulphur Springs, AL. He originally came from North Carolina I believe. According to my wife's father, Caroline Avans was a decendent of Chief Joseph Vann of the Cherokee Indians. Somehow the name was changed from Vann to Avans. I've been told that when some of the Vann's moved to Alabama that people would ask what their name was and they would tell them that they "were a vann". Somehow that became A-vans. I don't have much info on the Avans line other than Caroline. Any info you might have would be greatly appreciated. I know in later years that Caroline lived in Chattanooga, TN after she was divorced from James Byers.
