Michelle,

My father-in-law's grandmother was an Avans. He told me that they were really descendents of Chief Joseph Van who owned property in Dalton, GA until the trail of tears to Oklahoma. The name got changed from Van to Avans somehow.
My father-in-law said that when the Vans moved to Alabama, people would ask them who they were and they would say "I'm a-Van" and people mistook that for Avans. This is just here
say, but there are a lot of Avans in a cemetary in Dekalb County AL. I believe the name is Deerhead Cove Cemetary or something like that. Hope this helps.
