My great grandfather was Wesley Avans who at the time the Civil War started lived in Calhoun (McMinn Co.) Tenn. He was educated and a large landholder. (I have a copy of his will). He came home from the war a sick man and did not live not live but about 6 years longer.
My grandfather, Bradford Avans, was married twice. The family Bible lists the full names and birthdates of all his children. The "A" in Avans has been clearly changed to "E" for Evans on all names. My mother said her older half-brothers changed the spelling because "it was less confusing" to people.
I have never heard anything about the Indian connection for our our family until recently, but anything is possible!
We believe that Wesley came to Tennessee from South Carolina. Wesley married Artilessa Brock who was from SC. Mother said that her father (Bradford) visited family in Georgia several times, but she did not know anything about them. I do have the names of Wesley's and Bradford's children.
