We are new to the Awtrey/Autry family research, so don't know any stories like that, but one distant relative of mine in the Bryant family told us that one of the brothers generations back got upset with another one and dropped the t on the end of the name and called his family Bryan instead.
You might run across the family with names beginning with an "A", a "D", or an "O" as an example of some of the variations. I just assumed it came about as people just verbally stated their names without writing it out, and depended on someone else to spell it.
