I thought I'd followup this history with some observations, we forget too easily in trying to recapture history.1. Verbal histories. Items like we used to live with the Mitchell's, he was a nice man.. are easy to recover, as they are passed on as family stories. 2. What happened during the war(especially on the losing side) are not. "We don't talk about that." Try and get a vietnam vet to talk (or WWII marine for that matter) 3. I was adopted is not something that typically gets passed down well. 4. 15 children....ponder this. Your uncle is younger than you are. Now have a disaster/war/disease, and small county family groups tend to reconstruct. Nieces (by marriage) do remarry their uncles when their mother's sister dies. What this does to family trees is really a mess. Secondly, orphaned nephews and nieces are taken in. 5. Given names. Everyone names (remember you have 15 kids) their children after their brothers/sisters. Some names "Absalom Awtrey" become standards. 6. Typos and dislexia. You wouldnt believe how many times XX65 become XX56 even when the actual date is truly known. Combine this with dates not so certain. (Read a few of these posts and notice how many times you see "Oops me bad"). 7. Feuds. When you have 14 siblings feuds are common. People really did get disowned/blacksheeped. I have a great Aunt that I personnally "knew" as a small child, that my dad knows nothing about. There's a story there no one knows. They didnt talk about it. Bottom line is "ain't it fun!"
