Johnnie Melvin Autrey, 84, died Jan. 19, 2007, at the Courtyard Nursing Home in Fulton. He was born Jan 26, 1922, in Alabama to the late Clarence and Pelmia Hull Autrey. He served in the U.S. Army for many years and was a veteran of World War II. He retired from the Downey Veterans Hospital in Great Lakes, Ill., where he was an attendant. He was a Baptist. He enjoyed buying and selling at local auctions. Services were Jan. 20 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with burial in Union Grove Cemetery in Lee County. Survivors include his wife, Jewel Patterson Autrey of Fulton; his caregiver and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Autrey of Mantachie; two sisters, Mary Frances Pate and Olene Heath, both of Tallassee, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Genell Autrey of Wetumpla, Ala.; one granddaughter, Sherry Watkins; one great-grandson, Corey Grooms; one great-great-grandson, Gavin Grooms. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Johnnie L. Autrey, on Feb. 20, 2006; four brothers, Earnest, Willie, Forrest and Clarence Autrey Jr.; and two sisters, Emma Usgaard and Betty Watkins ---------- MARIETTA - John L. Autrey, 63, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born Feb. 20, 1943, in Decatur, Ala. He was a meat cutter for 48 years, working at Walker's Big Star, Bill's Minit Mart, Goff's Country Store and Mantachie Foods, where he was co-owner. He previously owned and operated Family Grocery and Meats. He was a member of the Dyersburg Church of God of Prophecy. He raised game birds, and enjoyed tractors and antique cars. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with the Rev. James Lawson officiating. Burial will be in the Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery near Mooreville. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dorothy "Dot" Autrey of Marietta; one daughter, Sherry Watkins and husband, Jeff, of Mooreville; his parents, Johnnie Melvin and Jewel Goldie Patterson Autrey of Tupelo; one grandson, Corey Grooms of Mantachie; special friends, Dawson White, Josh Hood, Zach Barnes, Geraldine Glover and Faye Pettigo. Pallbearers will be Scott Marlin, Keith Franks, Gene Franks, Jeff Franks, Rickey Kent, Tommy Chamblee, Greg Spradlin and Joe Grooms. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony and David Lawson. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home in Mantachie. Notify Administrator about this message?
