The story about John P. Autrey's wife, Margaret, running off with another man and leaving her starving children while he was off fighting in the war is a fairy tale.

Aaron Grayson Waycaster, the son of Margaret and George McLean Waycaster (the man she ran off with) was born in 9 Oct 1870. Since the war ended in 1865, John was obviously around. At the time their children ranged in age from about 15 to 8, so they were hardly little children left to fend for themselves.

John and Margaret divorced and she married William Thomas Russell about 1877. She died in Sevier County, TN in 1918.

George McLean Waycaster married Loretta "Rittie" Campbell about 1873 in TN. After she died, he married Mary Jane Allen in Yancey County on 26 Sep 1882. He died in Yancey County in 1914.

I realize the facts aren't as sensational as the family legend, but that's the way it is.
