For many years our extended Autrey (Autry, Awtry, etc.) family couldn't get any further back in their genealogy than Cornelius Autry (Immigrant) born in 1720. Some family members say he came to America directly from France, while others said he come from France, but lived in Ireland for several years before coming to America. Others claim he lived in Scottland. The point is, our efforts have been stymied. Now, the DNA technology most widely known for proving the guilt or innocence of a crime suspect, becomes a very able tool for the genealogist and family historian. One DNA website says: "The value of Family Tree DNA testing is its ability to help find "Genetic Cousins ™" by comparing the results of as few as two people. "Males are able to see if another male is a descendant from their direct paternal line. Our 12 marker Y-DNA test has become the world standard, being adopted by National Geographic's - Genographic Project. Our 37-marker test yields the world's tightest parameters to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA). You may order the 12 marker test and return to "refine" your test at a later time without the need to re-submit another DNA sample! "Women can determine which Haplogroup they are part of based upon the descent through their maternal line. Reports are compared to the Cambridge Reference Sequence, which show your deviation from this industry standard. We identify the lettered Haplogroup that your mtDNA is assigned to by the scientific community." I'm telling you all this to announce, "By the end of next week my DNA samples will be on their way to the lab." Once I mail the two mouth swabs back to the lab, I should have some very interesting results within 6 or 7 weeks. I suspect this will include the specific region of France from whence our family sprang. Another great thing about this is that DNA samples have already been taken all over the world, and some people are actively seeking to find relatives and sign a permission for their E-mail address to be posted on the DNA website. This is significant to me because, if one of our Autry 'cousins' in France has already had the DNA test done, I will be notified by the DNA people that there's a match... and I'll be able to contact that cousin. With that done, I should be able to find the Cornelius Autry lineage in France, with family members doing research on 'both sides of the pond'. This may be just the 'turning point' for which we've waited. So, now we embark on the "Autry DNA Project" to find out, without a doubt, the genetic history of our family for many generations. If you're at all interested, let me know. Although several 'DNA genealogy' companies exist, I'm using www.FamilyTreeDNA.com . Family Tree DNA provides the tests for "the Genographic Project" a partnership between the National Geographic Society, IBM and the Waitt Family Foundation.
