Don't write everything off just because those small towns have come on hard times. In most of these out of the way places are some folks who treasure their heritage. There may be historical societies. The records of Catholic churces that close always go to an archive run by the diocese or, in some cases, to whatever church remains to serve present day faithful.
There is a town somewhere in the Mesabi range that even has a Slavic chorus. I heard them on "The Prairie Home Companion" which is headquarted in St. Paul. It is a group of women who have beat the bushes all around the Mesabi for the old songs sung by the Slovenes, Croations, Slovaks and whoever else worked there.
It wouldn't hurt to do a google of the town, the township, the county or even the state to see what historical information survives and where it is kept. I know the State of Wisconsin has a department that does nothing but look after the preservation of all the ethnic heritages of that state.
