Stuart,
Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in Western Europe. The only place it was frowned on was in czarist Russia.
Austria was ruled by the Hapsburg family. They were very close to the popes for so many centuries that recently Emporer Karl, who succeded Franz-Josef for a short time, was beatified for trying to capitualate during WWI.
One caution. Numerous Slovaks were identified in the Ellis Island records and also in some census tracts as Slovenian. You would do well to confirm ethnicity in the subsequent census tracts.
If you ever find the place of origin the records from that place will probably be available thru' the Mormon's Family History Library.
