Robert,
Just a few important corrections to your info:
Robert stated:A person born in Belgrade in 1883 would have been born in Belgrade, Serbia.
Correction: Well if they would not have been born in Belgrade Serbia. Then where would they have been born!!Serbia in fact was liberated from Ottoman Turkish rule in 1803 and in 1833 would have been.... Serbia.
However not many Serbs came from Belgrade or Serbia "proper" prior to WW II.
Robert wrote: the 1920 census, which indicates the birthplace of Frank and his wife as Hungary, meaning that they would have been Croats, rather than Serbs.
uh... the fact is that most immigrants who identified themselves as Serbs (Servians on old ship manifests) came from Croatia or from the area which is now in Serbia called The Vojvodina.Prior to after the end of WW I, The Vojvodina was Backa, Banat Hungary or Srijem County Croatia. Yes Croatia was a seperate entity within the old Habsburg Empire and was known as the Kingdom of Croatia.
In re to the religious id of Serb=Orthodox, Croat=Catholic, that is generally accepted today, HOWEVER ship manifests show that people id'd themselves differently prior to approx 1922 (in that year the Orthodox Churches in Croatia, Bosnia and Dalmatia came under the Serbian Patriarch in Belgrade, prior to that they were under patriarchs in Srijemska Mitrovica, Croatia (now Serbia), Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) and Pecs, Hungary.
I believe that Christina stated that Frank was known as Bronko, a common name nowadays amongst both Croatians and Serbs. And that church she mentioned in Akron although not Orthodox nor Roman Catholic holds services in Serbian. In the heart of the Serb neighborhood in Parma there are 2 Orthodox Churches and an.. Appostolic Serbian Church.
And I would imagine that Frank ABRAHAM was not his original name...ABRAMOVIC is a common name of both Croat and Serbs from Croatia and means son of Abraham.
