John and his wife were SLOVAKS. Prior to 1920 they all lived in the Kingdom of Hungary. They went to Youngstown because it was full of Slovaks.
The place he came from is CHRAST NAD HORNADOM. It's up in the mountains in Spis'(spish) County. Population in 1994 was 684. The village had a Catholic church so we can assume he was a Catholic too.
Slovaks are few in number but not backward. Even this little village has a web site. If you, don't read Slovak you'll have to settle for Wikipedia in English;

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrasť_nad_Hornádom

It wouldn't hurt to look at the Slovak language web site. It probably has some nice pictures of the village and the surrounding mountains.
