Krainak or Krajn'ak or Krainiak (pronounced "CRY-nyock") is a Slavic surname. It means countryman, just as "paisan" does in Italian. So it's likely that you don't want today's Austria but one of the Slavic countries whose territory was once part of Austria-Hungary.Immigration in the year 1881 means that it is too early to be recorded in the Ellis Island database. To make any progress, you will need to come up with some family document or oral tradition that pins down the place of origin. For example, do you know what language they taught?Any ethnic/fraternal societies they belonged to?
