The Austria of today only goes back to 1920. Before that it was about 4 times bigger. The land that was lost is, today in 5 or 6 neighboring countries. The answers you seek can only be had if you know EXACTLY where in Austria these folks came from.
One thing to remember is these folks did not put their finger on a map and say, "I think I'll go there". Immigrants usually settled in places where relatives friends and neighbors from the old home town had already settled. Maybe a local historical society can shed some light on the place where the Fischerbauers and any other Austrians in New Ulm had come from. Among German speakers it was common for church records to show a lot of details about the old country origins of parishoners.
