"but she was an illegal immigrant and not exactly forthright with factual demographic information." I would not take this as fact! While it may be true chances are very, very slim. Of the dozens of such stories I have heard I have not found any to be factual. "There was no impending war in Austria at the time" True so that part of the story is dispelled. "but there was a pogrom against the Catholic aristocracy going on in Poland." Where did you get this info? The Kingdom of Poland was a Roman Catholic Country and when it was split with part going to Austria also a Roman Catholic country. Perhaps in the part under Russian rule which was an Orthodox country they did have an issue with Roman Catholics and in fact Tsar Alexander III did carry out pogroms against the Byzantine Rite Catholics and forced them to convert to Orthodoxy. " We know that she immigrated with a cousin" Again what proof is there of her immigrating with a cousin? Some facts or family story? "according to the death certificate" What death certificate? I looked at the Ohio Death Certificate data base, high and low, and could not find her? What is her name on the certificate? Found a 1909 death certificate, Carroll Co Ohio giving her name as Stacy COSICK. How has the immigration year been narrowed down to 1897? This in spite of the 2 census records which show 1881 and 188? Also many immigrants to Canada actually arrived via US Ports. I did a search for all ports, inc Canadian, and did not find anyone name beginning with Anast* last name sounds like Kosok... and came up with nothing but using name begins with Ann* there are several arrivals at US ports... none at Canadian ports.
