The common ways of find a place of origin is from a living person or from a document. If neither are available you can try:
The Ellis Island web site. Some members of this family may have come to America and American ship manifests (which you can view at no cost)contain a lot of personal information on each passenger.
Professor Rymunt's catalog of Polish surnames. Got to the Polish Genforum site and call up posting #17081. It explains how to call up Prof. Rymunt's web site. It lists almost all Polish surnames used in Poland in 1990 and says were and how many of each name appear. Locations in this catalog are only general but it may help to know where they are.
The Polish telephone directory. I don't have the web address but I know it is on line. It will tell you where a name is concentrated.
You must be aware that Austria lost control of Galicia in 1918 and the borders of Poland have been changed severely because of World War II. Some of Galicia is today in Western Ukraine.
Fortunately, there is a Brazilian who is also of Polish ancestry and he is a very fine genealogist. His name is Gilberto Magroski and you will find him on the Poland Genforum site.
