Carl, arrival records show Carl Frey, aged 37; wife Maria, aged 34; daughter Barbara, aged 4; and son Carl, aged 18 months; arriving in Quebec City on 15 June 1912 on a ship called the "Laurentic", which had set sail from Liverpool, England.Their final destination is indicated as Vancouver, British Columbia.Carl Frey indicated that he had been a farmer in Austria and intended to become a fruit farmer in Canada.
How they travelled from Austria to Liverpool, England, will of course require additional research.
You have to be aware that just like Canada and the U.S., Austria, too, has always been made up of provinces or states.
There are more towns in Austria called Weissenbach than one would probably ever be able to count. If you're absolutely certain that the Frey family were from the Weissenbach where the cellulose factory was located, then they were specifically from WEISSENBACH AN DER ENNS (Weissenbach on Enns), which is located in the northern part of the Austrian state or province of STYRIA (in German: STEIERMARK), the capital of which is the city of GRAZ.Weissenbach an der Enns (Weissenbach on Enns) is located about 75 miles or 120 km northwest of Graz.
The cellulose factory burnt on 3 May 1912, so the Frey family did leave shortly after that fire. But if Carl Frey was a farmer, I don't know as their having left would have had anything directly to do with that fire.Emigration took a good deal of planning anyway. If they left Weissenbach in late May, they would have had to have made their plans to emigrate to Canada well before that fire -- well before! So in my opinion, that was pure coincidence that they happened to have left Weissenbach shortly after that fire had occurred.(Again, I'm going on the assumption that based on what you've seen in old documents or records, you are absolutely certain that Weissenbach an der Enns in Styria is, of the many Weissenbachs in Austria, the Weissenbach the Frey family were from.)
I will also mention here that Frey is amongst the most common German surnames! There are thousands of people named Frey from one end of Germany to the other and from one end of Austria to the other who are in no way whatsoever related to one another.Having the name Frey in Germany or Austria is like having the name Jones in an English-speaking country. So you're actually wasting your time when you say "If there is a Frey in Austria who reads this and might know something, please reply" when you're dealing with such a common family name.
Robert
