Bottom line: I am trying to find the ancestor's of Grandpa Bennie Podraza. (1896-1970).I'll tell you what I know and hopefully you can point me in the direction of websites and/or data bases so that I can continue.
Oral History says Bennie Podraza worked ironing clothes when he first arrived in Chicago
From Bennie Podraza's obituary in the Greeley Citizen, his mother's name was Catherine Zagorski.
Ellis Island website:(searched by name) Benedikt Podraza arrived 7 Mar 1913, age 17. Ethnicity Austria Polish.Last Residence: Lenki, Galizia. Ship Kleist.Port of Departure:Bremen.According to the ship's manifest he had paid for his ticket himself, had also paid for a ticket to Chicago where he was going to his brother's Jan Podraza 1418 Cornelia.Occupation: Farm Laborer.Could read & write. He had $35. in his pocket. He'd left his father Jozef Podraza behind in Lenki, Galizia (mother not mentioned).
Ellis Island website: (searched by ship) found one other passenger from same home town. Tadeus Brudny, age 16, from Lenk, Galizia (same phonetic spelling). There is at least one Brudny buried in Omaha.
1910 US CensusJohn Podraza b. Austria Poland father/mother born Austria Poland.Language Polish. He's a presser at a tailor shop. Year of Immigration 1886.(marriage #2 to Albina) He's 46 yrs. They've been married for 15 years. - I'm guessing that's an uncle. Only relevance may be the family members in the garment industry
1920 US Census (another) John Podraza b. Poland. Language Polish. Tailor at May Co. department store.Year of Immigration 1907. Naturlalized 1913. Married. Owns his own home. He's 28 yrs. - I believe this is Benedikt's brother.
To support that the 28 year old (b. 1901) John Podraza is Benedikt Podraza's brother:
Ellis Island website: Jan Podraza arrived 8 Apr 1907, age 16. Ethnicity Austria, Galicy. Place of Birth Leki (and in this record it shows the Poish L with a line through it - so it almost looks like a Z) Ship Trave.Port of Departure: Bremen. According to the ship's manifiest Jan was going to Chicago, the name is hard to read maybe Jozef Handel. Could read & write. This record doesn't include occupation or who he left behind in Galacia.
1920 Census: Bennie Podraza b. abt 1897 in Poland, 23 yrs old, occupation-farmer, residing in Logan, Greeley County NE under Naturalized it says Pa (what does that mean?)
Same cenus page (2 farms down) is Madeline Smyth (his future wife), 17 yrs old, living with ther parents.
1930 Census Benard J. Podraza & Madeline Podraza, in Greeley County, NE
So, where do I go from here?
Does/Did St. Bartholomew serve both Leki Gorne and Leki Dorne?
Are the church records scanned or transcribed into a data base?
Are there National Digitalized Archives in Poland?
And finally, have you used the LDS microfilm records? Is there a process?
Any help would be appreciated.
