Hi Stephen,
The Charles Phelps travelling in 1861, age 21, is certainly the right age and as he does not appear in the Gloucestershire 1861 census, this certainly could be my ancestor. If it is, he must have gone on to New Zealand fairly soon, although I think the correct date of their marriage in New Zealand is June 22, 1863.I have seen it listed as 1862 but I think this is incorrect. He had been in New Zealand 7 months when he married.
I guess he could have gone directly to New Zealand, though the family story is that he went to Australia with his brother.Maybe it was to meet his brother who is already there. He had a brother William Newton Phelps who was born in 1838 in Cheltenham who is no longer there in 1861 and I think this is the brother who went to Australia.
I would certainy appreciate anything you might find on Charles Lorraine Phelps and Harriet Scrimshaw in Australia.
Sincerely,Eleanor
