William, my G2 grandfather, was b. in Denbighshire, Wales. In 1827 he m. Alice Parry in Pentre Llanrhaeadr, Denbighshire. In Jan. 1833 he and friends were accosted by gamekeepers while poaching on the Estate of Lord Dinorben. They were later arrested, tried and sentenced to 14 years transportation. In July 1833 they boarded the ship, Isabella, that arrived in Hobart in November 1833. William served his sentence under the assigned labor plan working for Benjamin Berthon within a radus of 50 miles from Hobart. He eventually received FREE PARDON and apparently migrated to the mainland as he participated in the AU gold rush. At some point he invited Alice to join him. She refused as she had learned he married in AU. In the 1851 census she considered herself a widow.
About 1810 after the Suez Canal was opened, William returned to Denbighshire seeking assistance from his children. By thqt time his youngest son, William, had emigrated to USA. He finally made his home with his daughter, Hannah, b. 1828 who m. Joseph Roberts 12 July 1851. William d. 11 May 1890 and was buried at Pentre Saron.
It is said that he would not return to Wales while Alice was still living. During his later yers he bragged about his red haired progeny in AU. How he he managed his life in AU is a mystery. I am still trying to find my AU cousins but limited information has prevented my efforts. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
