Lucinda Maria Lawrence was definitely buried in Ballarat which was where they were married She died 24/11/1861 aged 38 which is the correct age for her and is buried in Ballarat Cemetery. (She was Born Lucinda Maria Whitney in 1825 in Cork and later married Mr Bate in Victoria before marrying James Lawrence in 1859 in Ballarat.) The headstone in Hindmarsh states Janet M L Lawrence died 30/8/1867 and we have all thought over the years that this must have been Lucinda but that someone got the ages wrong!!
Also in the same grave is his second wife Martha Crossman (nee Palmer). He married her on 19/2/1868.

There is a record in newspapers of the sudden death of Mrs James Lawrence who worked for Dench & Co Tanners at Hindmarsh on 30/8/1867.

It is all very confusing - is there a marriage for James in Adelaide prior to the one with Martha Crossman Palmer.

Joan
