Jean, I think it would be easier if your friend got this death certificate or his marriage certificate to find where he was born
I have checked SA marriages and there are none that fit those parents IF he was born in SA
There are too many William CAHILL in immigration indexes to know if any of them would be the one you are looking for and of course you wouldn't know which state he arrived in if he came from overseas
You can get transcripts of NSW bdm certificates cheaper than the registry through transcription agents
the one I use is Joy Murrin
