Hello Fiona!

As of today, 29 March 2006, no response. If you have not made your trip and you are able to look up fiche #6,342,923 regarding my ancestor, Thomas Douggan (Duggan) the following is all that I have about him.

He married Jane Mageraty, 23 June 1857, Trinity Church, Adelaide. Her father listed as Arthur Magarity. Thomas' father listed as Wm. Douggan. Thomas' age 30, Laborer, residence in Adelaide.

Copy of their marriage, District Adelaide, is #2917 of 1857. It lists Thomas as a "widower" and Jane as "Spinister" - they married in the Parish Church of the United Church of England and Ireland by banns by James Farrell, M.A. I tried to establish if the 'banns' posted at that time exist anywhere today. The Mortlock Library responded to my inquiry - they do not have them. So I sent a letter (trying to get a clue where in Northern Ireland Thomas originated) to the Trinity Church asking if such 'banns' existed, if so where? That letter is dated February 18, 2004 - no response.

Thomas' death record indicates he died at age 83 on 9 April 1904, place - Destitute Asylum, Hindmarsh Ward, District Adelaide.

I have found the wife, Jane Magarity, listed on passenger list ship Fortune arrival 6 June 1854, age 30, single woman, servant, Irish.

The ages at time of marriage for both as 30 is suspect. They had two male children--one born 13 Feb. 1856 the other unknown date.

I have already searched microfilms #304,774-5 & 6 "Inwards Assisted Immigrant Lists" State Archives Adelaide records covering time frame of 1845 through 1857 with no success.

I have no idea how, when or where Thomas became a "widower."

I hope I have not confused you too much with the above info. If you are able to look at this fiche -- THANK YOU MANY TIMES OVER. (Even if nothing found - I certainly understand - I will add it to my log of "searched" fiche/films.

Thank you again for your response to my inquiry.

Sincerely, Jean
