Hi Maureen,
Atherton is a country town located on the Atherton Tablelands which is South-West appox. 95kls from Cairns. It used to be a timber town as well as farming. Fancy timbers were taken from the rainforest and used for cabinet making etc. The Govt`s. re-afforestation program has seen most of this industry gone. The area is also a tourist attraction as there are many sites as well as the rain-forest to see, and is close to Cairns and Innisfail. If you like the bush an ideal place to go and get off the beaten track, cannot get lost as most of the roads come back onto the main highway.
Regards Don
